What is the wedding cost per guest in Portugal in 2026?

In 2026, the venue and catering for a wedding in Portugal cost €60 to €140 per guest. This is the number a quinta, the country estate where many Portuguese weddings take place, means when it quotes a price per person. Catering alone costs €50 to €75 for a buffet, €75 to €110 for table service and €110 to €160 for a premium service.

The other figures we found are close. Quinta hire, which usually includes the catering, costs €80 per person on average, between €40 and €200. Catering and drinks for 100 guests cost €8,000 to €13,000 in 2026: €80 to €130 per person.

A quinta in Peniche€40 to €69Welcome drinks, meal, buffets, wine, open bar and late supper

Prices published by the venues themselves, read on 20 October 2026. They are examples, not an average: always check the written quote.

The price moves with the type of service, the region, the day and the size of the list. Small weddings cost more per person than weddings with over 100 guests. And you can only compare per-person prices between venues if you know what each number includes.

What does each guest really cost?

It depends on which sum you do. The average cost per guest divides the whole wedding by the number of people, with the photographer, the outfits and the music inside it. The cost of one more guest adds up only what is paid per head: the menu, the drinks and the favour. The second number is always lower, and it is the one that matters when you decide the list.

For the example, we use the starting settings of the calculator in our guide to how much a wedding costs in Portugal. The fixed-price items add up to €9,200. Each guest adds €125 for venue and catering and €4 for a favour. With 100 guests, the wedding costs €22,100.

2026 figures. Venue and catering: €125 is the mid level in our total-cost guide, inside the 2026 range of €60 to €140; the 2027 menus at a quinta in Sintra cost €83 to €124 with VAT. Open bar: about €30 per person when it is extra. Cake: set to €0 because several of the menus we read include it and the total-cost guide counts it as a fixed €400. Favour: €2 to €8 per guest. Invitations go per household, not per person, so they stay in the fixed costs.

The calculator shows only the part that moves with the list. For the total, add your fixed costs: the €9,200 in the example, or your own. To share out the rest of the money, see how to split a wedding budget.

What does the per-person price include, and what is extra?

In the menus we read, the per-person price nearly always includes the venue, the meal, the service and the drinks served with the meal. What is most often left out: the open bar, extra hours, music and VAT. The open bar, welcome drinks, the late-night supper and premium drinks are almost always billed separately.

Usually in the per-person price

  • The venue and table service (at the quintas in Sintra and Alenquer)
  • Welcome drinks and nibbles, the meal and the dessert buffets
  • Wine, water, beer and soft drinks with the meal
  • Basic decoration: tablecloths and simple centrepieces (at the quinta in Sintra)
  • On some menus, the cake, sparkling wine and a menu tasting for the couple

Often paid separately

  • An open bar or premium drinks: about €30 per person
  • Extra hours: €200 an hour at one quinta, €10 per adult per hour of bar at another
  • The DJ, which one quinta's terms leave out
  • VAT, when the price says "+ IVA"
  • The space itself, when it is hired by the hour, as at a venue in Almada

VAT, called IVA in Portugal, is what most often skews a comparison. Under the Portuguese VAT Code (Código do IVA), food and drink services pay the intermediate rate, 13% on the mainland (article 18). Alcoholic drinks and soft drinks are excluded and pay 23%. A €100 menu "+ IVA" costs €113 at 13% and €123 at 23%.

Venues write their prices in different ways. The quinta in Sintra gives its menus with VAT included. Another quinta gives all prices without VAT in its general terms, unless it says otherwise. Before you compare two quotes, put both on a with-VAT basis. If you are used to prices at home, check this first.

Ask every venue before you compare

  • Does the per-person price include VAT? At what rate?
  • Which drinks are included, and until what time is the bar open?
  • How many hours of party are included, and what does each extra hour cost?
  • Are the cake, the sparkling wine and the late supper in the menu?
  • What do children pay, and from what age?
  • What does the meal for the photographer, the band and the rest of the team cost?
  • Is there a minimum number of guests? What happens below it?
  • When is the final number due, and what does each extra guest on the day cost?

How much does a wedding for 50, 80, 100 or 150 guests cost?

With the same settings, 50 guests cost about €15,650, 80 guests €19,520, 100 guests €22,100 and 150 guests €28,550. These are our own sums, with the 2026 figures from our total wedding cost calculator. For 100 guests, a 2026 market study, published in May, gives an average of €21,127.

150€28,550€18,75066%

Fixed costs of €9,200 (photographer, video, DJ, flowers, outfits, rings, hair and make-up, cake, invitations and a Saturday civil registry) and €129 per guest. No open bar, honeymoon or contingency. Percentages rounded.

Average cost per guest, with the same settings
50 guests€313
80 guests€244
100 guests€221
150 guests€190
One more guest, on any list€129

The total cost divided by the guests. The last bar is what each person adds: the menu and the favour.

The table shows two things. The average cost falls as the list grows, because the fixed costs are shared by more people. And the venue and catering weigh more and more: 40% of the total with 50 guests, two thirds with 150. The 55% to 65% of the budget that venue and catering usually take matches, in these sums, a list of 100 to 150 people.

What do children and the suppliers' team pay?

At the two quintas where we found the rule published, children up to 3 eat free, children aged 4 to 9 pay half and from 10 they pay as adults. That is the rule at a quinta in Sintra and at a quinta in Alenquer. It is not a national rule in Portugal: each venue sets its own.

What a child pays
AgeQuinta in SintraQuinta in AlenquerWith a €125 menu
Up to 3FreeFree€0, but takes a seat
4 to 950%Half, counts as half an adult€62.50
10 and over100%Counts as an adult€125

Conditions published by the two quintas, read on 20 October 2026. The quinta in Sintra also asks for the number of children who don't pay but need a seat.

With a €125 menu, ten children aged 4 to 9 cost €625 instead of €1,250. Count them separately from the first draft of the list, because the venue will ask for three numbers: adults, children paying half and children who don't pay.

The suppliers' team eats too, and the couple usually pays. Some photographers write into their terms that the couple provides meals for the whole team on the wedding day. Some quintas also offer a cheaper staff meal. We found no venue that publishes that price, so ask for it in writing, with the number of people.

Make a list of the team the way you make the guest list: photographer, video, music, wedding planner. And count yourselves. In one quinta's general terms, the total number of guests includes the hosts, which means the couple.

What is a minimum guest number, and what can it cost?

It is the number of people the venue charges for even if fewer come. Many quintas have one, especially on Saturdays and in summer. Below it, you pay for empty seats: at a quinta in Peniche, anyone below the minimum pays for the minimum number of guests.

Minimum guest numbers in published conditions
VenueMinimumWhat the rule says
A quinta in Alenquer120 adultsOn Saturdays, from May to October
A quinta in Sintra100 guestsOn menus with extras, such as a DJ or children's entertainment, those only apply with 100 guests paying full price
A quinta with brochure packages50 guestsBrochure packages are for 50 to 260 guests; weddings of up to 50 get separate terms
A caterer with two quintas30 or 50 guests30 at one quinta, 50 at the other
A quinta in PenichevariesBelow the minimum, you pay for the minimum

Read on 20 October 2026 in the conditions each venue publishes.

Do the sum before you sign. If the minimum is 120 adults and 100 come, you pay for 20 empty seats: with a €125 menu, that is €2,500 with nobody sitting there. Below the minimum, cutting guests saves nothing, and adding people up to it costs nothing more on the menu.

How much do you save by cutting the guest list?

Each guest fewer saves what they cost per head: €129 in our numbers, or €1,290 for every ten people. Counting catering alone, the 2026 saving runs from €80 to €150 per guest, and cutting 20 guests can save more than €2,000.

The average cost, on the other hand, rises as the list shrinks, because the photographer and the outfits cost the same. Don't let that worry you: what counts for the decision is the total, and the total always falls, down to the contract's minimum.

  1. 1

    Work the sum backwards

Take the fixed costs off your budget and divide the rest by the cost of each guest. With €20,000, €9,200 fixed and €129 per person, 83 guests fit.

  2. 2

    Check the venue's minimum

If the contract asks for 100 adults, a list of 90 saves nothing. Choose the venue after you know the size of the list, not before.

  3. 3

    Split the list into circles

Close family, friends, wider family, colleagues. Cut from the outside in, one circle at a time.

  4. 4

Agree the same rules for both sides

Plus-ones, children and work colleagues: decide once and apply it to the whole list, so nobody feels the cut fell on one side.

  5. 5

Cut before the invitations go out

Once an invitation is sent, going back is hard. Invitations go about 3 months before the wedding, or 6 with guests coming from abroad.

  6. 6

Compare with a cut to the fixed costs

Ten guests are worth €1,290, almost the whole video in the example (€1,300). Put the two options side by side and decide what you would rather have on the day.

To build the list in these circles, with each person's mobile number, start with our wedding guest list guide.

In Budget, you type the total and how many guests you expect. The Per guest figure is the total divided by the guests who have confirmed. With no confirmations, it uses your guest list, and with no list, your estimate. So the number follows the list as replies come in. It is on the Elegante and Único plans (how it works).

FAQ

How much does a wedding for 100 people cost in Portugal?

In 2026, a wedding with 100 guests costs €21,127 on average, according to a market study published in May. With our calculator's starting settings, the sum comes to €22,100: €12,500 for venue and catering and €9,600 for the rest. Each guest costs €221 on average, but each extra one adds only €129.

How much does a wedding buffet cost per person?

In 2026, a simple buffet costs €50 to €75 per person in Portugal. Table service costs €75 to €110, and a premium service €110 to €160. With 100 guests, choosing a buffet over table service changes the total by €2,500 to €3,500. Always ask whether drinks and VAT are included.

Does the price per person include drinks?

Often it includes the drinks served with the meal, but not the open bar. The 2027 menus at a quinta in Sintra include wine, beer, soft drinks and an open bar. In many cases the price per guest leaves drinks out, and an open bar can add about €30 per person. Ask for the list of drinks in writing.

Do children pay the full menu at a wedding?

Usually not. At a quinta in Sintra and another in Alenquer, children up to 3 eat free, children aged 4 to 9 pay half and from 10 they pay as adults. Each venue has its own rule, so check it in the contract. Children who don't pay still need a seat and count for the tables.

How much money should you give at a wedding in Portugal in 2026?

In Portugal, guests usually give €100 to €150 each, and the €100 is meant to cover the meal. The 2027 menus we read cost €83 to €124 per person, with VAT. At a restaurant or a simpler venue, €50 to €100 is common.

Do the bride and groom count in the guest number?

In many contracts, yes. In one quinta's general terms, the total number of guests includes the hosts and the people staying at the estate. If you give the venue 100 names without counting yourselves, you are two seats and two meals short. Ask how the venue counts, and put yourselves on your own list.

Can you have a wedding for €20 per person?

At a wedding venue, hardly. The cheapest menus we found start at €25 and €30, in Madeira, at May 2025 prices. Wedding catering costs €30 to €150 per person. With €20 per person, ask restaurants for a group menu.

Who pays for the photographer's and the band's meals?

Usually the couple. Some photographers write into their terms that the couple provides meals for the whole team on the wedding day. Some quintas have a staff meal that costs less than the guests' menu. Ask for the price and how many people in the team will eat, and get it into the quote.
